Della Robbia

A Della Robbia is a type of sculpted work of art that is surrounded by a colorful garland of fruit. The style originated in the 1440s in Italy with sculptor Luca Della Robbia. The tradition was carried on by his nephew Andrea and his son, Giovanni. Many of the original Della Robbias are found in Italy today including the Madonna of the Rosary, Madonna of the Apple, Meeting of St. Dominic and St Francis and the Deposition. Today, reproductions of original Della Robbia designs are made by artisans in Florence who hand-paint and hand-glazes each terra cotta piece.
