St. Gregory the Great was born to a wealthy patrician family. He pursued a secular political career and held the highest civil honor-Perfect of Rome position. Gregory entered monastic life and when he was 38 years old, he was made a decone of Rome. He was elected pope by acclamation, accepting against his will and despite his poor health. The two chief features of Gregory's lasting work are the enforcement of the papal supremacy and the establishment of the temporal position of the pope.
