St. Barbara was the daughter of a rich heathen named Dioscorus. After acknowledging herself to be a Christian, she was condemned to death by beheading. The father himself carried out the death-sentence, in punishment he was struck by lightning on the way home. St. Barbara has often been portrayed by standing in a tower, carrying the palm of a martyr in her hand, holding a chalice and sacramental wafer.
