The Orthodox Cross has 3 cross bars, as opposed to 1 that we all are familiar with. The upper bar represents the sign INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). The lower slant bar is a stylized footrest. Folklore holds that the lower end of the slant bar points to hell, the upper to heaven, representing the destinies of the two theives. One repented, going to heaven, the other didn't. Sterling Silver and Gold over Sterling (Vermeil Plate) comes with 18" Chain. 14k Chain can be purchased seperately. A beautiful gift for one coming into the faith at Baptism.
