Communion Paten – Mass Accessories – First Communion Gifts

Similar in shape to a Mass paten, the communion paten plays an important role in the Eucharistic celebration and is an integral part to the Mass collection. Communion patens are typically round in shape, with a saucer-like appearance, but include a projection handle that extends from one side. When in use, the communion paten is held under the chin of the communicant and is used to catch any particles of the Sacred Host that may fall. The piece is not blessed, but is still typically made of a precious metal such as silver or gold in the same manner as other Mass items.
