Altar and Sanctuary Lamps

A sanctuary lamp or altar lamp is a type of light that is placed at the altar of sanctuaries in many denominations of Jewish and Christian faiths. The origin of the light comes from the book of Exodus and the Torah, where the icon has special meanings that religions have placed on it. In general, it is agreed that the eternal flame is representative of God's eternal presence. Parallels between eternal light and the lamp are also associated with the piece.

In a church or temple, the sanctuary light is never allowed to dim or go out. In the event of a storm or electrical failure, an alternative energy source is employed to prevent the light from extinguishing. Older styles of lamps were fueled by oil, but modern sanctuary lamps use electricity and some are even solar powered.

Matthew F. Sheehan offers several designs of electric altar lamps to choose from. Many of our lamps have a red shade, which is the traditional color. Electric sanctuary lights are styled after traditional lamps with a tall shade and a short base made of metal such as gold or brass. Choose the sanctuary lamp design that's right for your space and illuminate your area with light and love.
