Host Boxes

The host box is a type of vessel used to store the consecrated hosts within a tabernacle. Host boxes are typically round and modestly sized. Most are outfitted with a lid that serves to protect and preserve the host until needed. Host box communion containers are typically only lightly decorated, often with just a cross on the lid and plain sides. Most host boxes are made of (or plated with) semi-precious metals such as gold or silver. Communion host boxes may also be used as a ciborium during services.
