Hand painted with fine detail 24" statue of Our Lady of Charity. The story of Caridad del Cobre is told: In 1608, 2 Cuban natives and a 10 year old slave boy, went by boat in search of salt to preserve meats. A storm erupted and they were forced to stop. By daybreak the ocean was calm and they took back to the sea. They viewed a white bundle floating on the waves. When it came closer, they realized it was a statue of the Blessed Mother holding the Child Jesus with three angels below her. The statue was attached to a plank inscribed: "I am the Virgin of Charity." In 1916 Pope Benedict declared Her the Patroness of Cuba.
